PROVIDENCE – Gov. Donald L. Carcieri has named Anna Cano-Morales to the R.I. Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education, replacing Gary Grove, a nine-year member whose term on the board will soon expire. Her appointment is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
In a statement today, Carcieri thanked Grove for “his dedicated service, [which] has made a valuable contribution to the cause of education in Rhode Island,” and praised Cano-Morales as “a valuable addition to the Board of Regents.

“Through her excellent leadership, she has given strong support to Supt. [Frances] Gallo to improve educational opportunities for all students in Central Falls,” Carcieri said in announcing her appointment. “She has been instrumental in the recently developed partnership between the Central Falls schools and the University of Rhode Island.” (READ MORE) “She has demonstrated her commitment to improving education in Rhode Island through her professional work and her service on various civic boards.

Cano-Morales – honored last year by Providence Business News as a member of its annual 40 Under Forty (READ MORE) – is senior community philanthropy officer at The Rhode Island Foundation, the chairwoman of the Central Falls School Board and a member of the Urban Education Task Force chaired by Annenberg Institute Director Warren Simmons. She previously had served Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education (RISE) for three years.
Cano-Morales “has done exemplary work as chair of the Central Falls School Board, where she has advocated for improved student achievement; partnerships with other stakeholders, such as the University of Rhode Island; and efficiencies in governance,” said Robert G. Flanders Jr., chairman of the Board of Regents. “She will be a welcome new presence.”
Her appointment also was praised by state Sen. Daniel J. Issa, chair of the Senate Committee on Education. “I think that Ana Cano-Morales is an excellent candidate for the Board of Regents and I anticipate supporting her through the nomination process,” he said.
“I am honored to be chosen,” said Cano-Morales, a resident of North Providence. “And I look forward to working under Justice Flanders on policies and issues that are pressing in today’s education system.”
