PROVIDENCE – Construction jobs in the Ocean State continue to fall, according to the Associated General Contractors of America.
The Rhode Island construction industry shed 4.3 percent of its work force – or 700 jobs – in April compared with a month prior, the association said. The number of jobs tumbled to 15,700, down from 16,400 in March and down from 17,500 in April 2009.

In neighboring Massachusetts, the number of jobs in April fell to 105,600, a 7.8 drop compared with a year prior. In Connecticut jobs numbered 54,900 in April, down 0.4 percent from a year ago.
Forty-seven states and the District of Columbia lost jobs in year-over-year comparisons. On a percentage basis, the Nevada construction industry saw the steepest drop, shedding 27.8 percent of its jobs. On the flip side, North Dakota showed the strongest gains, with jobs up 8.1 percent.
The association gathers its data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
