PROVIDENCE – Continental Airlines Inc. said Friday it will lay off 18 ground workers at T.F. Green Airport later this spring and outsource their jobs to contractors.

A total of 150 ground crew members will lose their jobs on June 1 at T.F. Green and six other airports in Greensboro, N.C.; Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo.; Norfolk and Richmond, Va.; and Pensacola, Fla., Continental spokeswoman Julie King said in an e-mail.
The layoffs were announced Thursday in an e-mail to employees.
The cuts are being made because Houston-based Continental, the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, has decided after a two-year evaluation to use outside firms’ ground workers at airports where Continental flights are made by regional partners, King said.
“The affected stations are the only remaining regional partner stations at which Continental performs ground-handling services,” she said. “Continental already uses third-party ground-handling services in many stations, both domestically and internationally.”
ExpressJet Airlines Inc. operates nonstop flights under the Continental Express brand from T.F. Green to Cleveland and Newark, according to the R.I. Airport Corporation. Colgan Air Inc. operates flights from T.F. Green to Newark under the Continental Connection brand.
