Cox Communications presented $16,000 in scholarships to eight Rhode Island high school seniors during a ceremony held at the Rhode Island Statehouse. General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio, honorary chairperson of the Cox Scholarship Program, was joined at the awards ceremony by John Wolfe, vice president, government affairs and public affairs of Cox Communications.
More than 120 applications for the 2009 scholarships were received from Connecticut and Rhode Island this year. Scholarship recipients were chosen based on their outstanding academic achievement, community service and interest in pursuing a career in the communications, telecommunications and technology or engineering fields. This year, Cox increased each award from $1,000 to $2,000.
“Our increased investment through the Cox Scholarship program comes at a time when many Rhode Island families are coping with the challenging economy,” said Paul Cronin, vice president and general manager of Cox Communications New England. “We believe these scholarships reduce the burden on families while enabling these young people to pursue higher education and realize their aspirations,” he said. •
