PROVIDENCE – Cox Communications Inc. announced it has upgraded and expanded services under its ON DEMAND application, available to Digital Cable subscribers.
The news came just after rival Verizon Communications Inc. announced the release of its new In-Home Agent computer application, which allows subscribers to manage their television, phone and Internet accounts via their PCs.

Separately, Verizon announced last week that its new fiber-optic Internet and television service, FiOS, is now available in two more Rhode Island communities, East Providence and Woonsocket. The additions bring to 25 the total number of cities and towns in the state where Verizon has introduced FiOS.
Doreen Studley, vice president of marketing for Cox Communications New England, said in a statement that Cox’s new initiative will both “make navigation easy” and “increase the amount of On Demand programming available to subscribers.”
New On Demand features will include horizontal scrolling for navigating files, “skip” functions that allow users to skip back and forth through programs in 15 minute intervals, and an instant replay function that will “jump” back 10 seconds in the program being viewed.
Verizon’s new In-Home Agent application offers a more customer service oriented package, allowing Verizon FiOS customers the ability to fix problems that would have previously required the help of an agent, Verizon representatives said in a statement.
“Many service requests, either for feature or function setup or operational issues, can now be resolved without a phone call,” Bill Foshay, senior vice president for Verizon Telecom regional operations, said in a statement. “Nothing could be simpler, and you need no technical skills whatsoever,” he said. “It’s like assigning one of our agents to each customer’s home, and it’s faster than any other form of service interaction.”
The computer application is already installed on the computers of thousands of FiOS customers, Verizon said.
In addition to their In-Home Agent application, Verizon has also announced that FiOS subscribers will have access to a “quick codes” feature which will provide on-screen codes to be used when technical issues arise. The codes, Verizon said in a statement, each signify a specific problem and can be given to a technical worker to help quickly identify and settle the issue.
