That was up from the 1.2 billion prescriptions CVS filled in 2008. A decade earlier, in 1998 – and before its merger with Caremark Rx. Inc. – CVS filled just 251 million prescriptions.

CVS retail stores filled about 615 million prescriptions, or about 18 percent of all prescriptions filled in retail pharmacies in the U.S. in 2009, according to the company.

In addition, CVS’ pharmacy-benefit management division, which operates under brands including Caremark and RxAmerica, filled about 660 million prescriptions for patients from more than 3,000 organizations.

CVS Caremark’s annual sales reached $98.73 billion in 2009, and executives say they expect the total to top $100 billion for the first time this year. The company posted a profit of $3.7 billion last year.

CVS said it had 7,025 retail drugstores in 41 states and Washington, D.C., as of Dec. 31 and controlled the most or second-most market share in 68 of the nation’s 100 biggest drugstore markets. That included 58 stores in Rhode Island and 352 in Massachusetts.

CVS has added 2,600 stores in the past five years, almost half through acquisitions and some of which were relocated from nearby locations. The company expects to open another 250 to 300 new or relocated stores this year.

CVS Caremark had about 211,000 employees last year, of which roughly 84,000 were part-timers who worked less than 30 hours per week.
