2022 40 Under Forty Awards
Daniel Roxbury, 36
Associate professor of chemical engineering, University of Rhode Island
How has COVID-19 changed your industry? Virtual classes were hard both on the students and the professors. I do feel bad for the students that missed full years of their on-campus college experience due to COVID-19. Additionally, running my lab during [the pandemic] was difficult. Reduced capacity within the lab meant that our research productivity took a hit. We still hold the majority of lab meetings virtually.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Perfection is the enemy of productivity. This rings true in many aspects of my job.
Where do you see yourself in five years? I hope to further expand my research laboratory at URI and be a global leader within my field.
What is your greatest attribute that you bring to your job? I believe that I have a genuine passion for science and I convey that in my teaching and advising. My students have said the same!
What led you to pursuing a career in your current industry? I honestly never thought that I would be a university professor. I had always loved science and math, and decided to pursue research as a career. It wasn’t until I realized that I could run my own lab as an engineering professor that I decided to take this career path. That was one of the best decisions of my life. I feel lucky and honored every time that I step into my lab or into a classroom to teach the next generation of scientists and engineers.
