CRANSTON – The R.I. Department of Labor and Training today launched a statewide campaign to educate employers and employees about their rights and responsibilities under workers’ compensation law.

The multimedia effort – dubbed the “Rhody Red” campaign for its cartoon rooster mascot, who clucks “workers’ comp, comp, comp!” – includes radio and newspaper ads, billboards, posters and brochures in both Spanish and English.

“We want to remind all Rhode Island employers about their responsibility to provide Workers’ Compensation insurance,” DLT Director Adelita S. Orefice said in the announcement, “and make sure that every employee knows that this coverage is more than a benefit, it is a right.”

The department’s Fraud and Compliance Unit last year collected nearly $400,000 in penalties from 342 employers who were operating without the required insurance, the DLT said. “If employers, employees, medical providers or the general public have any doubt about a business’ coverage, we encourage them to call us and guarantee that their call is confidential,” Orefice said.
