A vibrant and growing downtown is so important for the state to be able to compete nationally for jobs and to attract new companies; to preserve and protect our environment and quality of life; and to create opportunities for individuals to develop and connect with others.
As a community, we have worked diligently to transform Providence's core into a 21st-century downtown. It is not easy; every project, be it public or private, has a long story of overcoming challenges.
What does it take to accomplish projects and transform a city? First, create a compelling, understandable vision and plan. The next is leadership from the public and private sectors, along with generating support from organizations and citizens. … Finally, a long-term approach and persistence are critical. Projects take a long time; one needs to be prepared to work over several years and, in some cases, decades.
The world is a dynamic place; cities and downtowns cannot stay stagnant. Positive changes and projects are always needed to continue moving forward. •
