PROVIDENCE – Collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in fiscal 2018 totaled $5.1 million, a 14.8 percent increase from fiscal 2017 when collections totaled $4.4 million, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Wednesday.
Collections for the fiscal year included $4.2 million from hotels, compared with $3.8 million one year prior. Hosting and room resellers accounted for $129,031 in collections in fiscal 2018, compared with $77,802 in fiscal 2017, and realtors and homeowners accounted for $763,806 in 1 percent hotel tax collections, compared with $495,903 the year before.
The municipality with the largest 1 percent hotel tax collection in the state in fiscal 2018 was Newport, which collected $1.2 million, closely followed by Providence at $1.1 million.
The largest nominal increase in collections from fiscal 2017 to fiscal 2018 took place in New Shoreham, where collections increased $178,183 to $478,072 for the year.
Collection of the 1 percent hotel tax in Rhode Island in June totaled $592,611, a 17.8 percent increase year over year from $503,230.
The collection in June consisted of $486,939 from hotels, $16,639 from hosting platforms and room resellers, and $89,033 from realtors and homeowners. In June 2017, the collection breakdown was $434,503 from hotels, $4,563 from hosting platforms and room resellers, and $64,164 from realtors and homeowners.
The municipality with the largest nominal increase in collections year over year in June was Newport, where collections increased $25,277 to $139,806 – the largest collection in the state in June.
The largest nominal decrease in collections year over year was in Providence, declining $740 to $112,720.
