DOR: Local hotel tax collections decline 1.4% in May

PROVIDENCE – Local 1 percent hotel tax collections for May 2017 totaled $413,176, a year-over-year decline of 1.4 percent, according to an R.I. Department of Revenue report released Monday.

The expansion of the local hotel tax to include the reselling of lodging by online-travel companies, the unlicensed rental of accommodations via internet platforms and other media, as well as on vacation-home rentals netted $57,555 in May, a $50,468 increase year over year.

Warwick reported the largest nominal increase of any municipality year over year, increasing collections by $7,630 to $55,488 in May. Newport declined the most of any municipality in the state, falling $19,107 year over year to $99,785.

Fiscal year to date, the local 1 percent hotel tax collections have totaled $3.91 million, a 12 percent increase year over year.
