A 40 Under Forty winner last year, Dr. Sumita Gokhale’s dedication to her craft is still growing.
She remains a pathologist at University Pathology LLC, a fast-growing group practice out of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence. She also maintains a faculty position at Boston University.
Gokhale came to Rhode Island in 2007 with an impressive academic resume, including degrees from two renowned medical colleges based in India, a residency at the University of Texas’ Medical Branch and a fellowship at Harvard Medical School.
Her work has also included several funded-research activities, including studies of tissue fixatives and breast cancer.
Gokhale said she’s taken on an ever-increasing amount of work, a duty she considers necessary.
“Since we are growing faster than we can hire, I along with other pathologists in the group are going the extra mile – and hours – to help support the growth,” Gokhale wrote in her 2009 40 Under Forty application.
In the past year, Gokhale’s resume has expanded. With University’s practice continuing to grow, she has also begun taking on clients at Westerly Hospital.
In May, she was profiled in the 2009-10 “Cambridge Who’s Who Registry Among Executive and Professional Women in the Field of Research, Medicine and Healthcare.”
Gokhale also presented the finding of her research on lung carcinogens at the annual conference of United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology last March.
It may seem like a daunting amount of work, but if you ask the East Greenwich resident, Gokhale, says she does it’s all for a good reason – her family.
“I derive my motivation, energy and enthusiasm from my very supportive husband and my 11- and 2-year-old sons,” Gokhale wrote. &#8226
