As the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) continues its transition to align with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), many in the community have unanswered questions. Deborah A. Gist, Rhode Island’s Commissioner of Education; and Mary Ann Snider, Chief of Educator Excellence and Instructional Effectiveness, will address those concerns and provide an overview/update on the CCSS transition as guest speakers at the East Bay Chamber of Commerce’s Coffee & Commerce networking breakfast on Friday, June 27, from 7:30 – 9 a.m. at the Wharf Tavern in Warren.

Dedicated to improving the U.S. labor workforce, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation launched an informative website about Common Core and its effect on the small business owner: www.businessforcore.org. Users can compare and contrast their state’s performance against other states, and find both pro and con arguments about Common Core.
In 2012, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation released its Leaders and Laggards Report, wherein Rhode Island scored a ‘C’ in meeting labor market demand among higher education institutions. The state does not measure student learning outcomes or track graduate performance in the labor market. The next report card is due out this September.
