Innovex, founded 50 years ago as the typewriter repair shop Advanced Business Machines, plans to celebrate its new name with a kick-off party on June 23 and continued expansion. Innovex is looking to hire 12 people – managed print services and IT professionals as well as “printologists” – by year-end. Peter Parisi, president and CEO of Innovex, took some time to discuss the move.
PBN: So first of all, what is printology? What about document production and management can be seen as a science?
PARISI:It’s the fusion of electronic document printing with networking and software so that equipment like multifunction devices, copiers, printers, and scanners are running reliably and at minimum cost.

PBN: Your company just changed its name from Advanced Business Machines to Innovex this month. Besides the new name, what else has changed?
PARISI:We’ve been sprucing up our Lincoln offices and conference center with new paint and signs! And we joined the first million of organizations that have moved into the Internet’s new frontier with a .co web address. More substantively, we’ve added new Office Efficiency Analysts and Managed Print Services consultants, deepened our printology resources and expanded our document device, office supplies [and] IT services.
PBN: Innovex is continuing to expand and hire. What about your business model made Innovex resilient to the economic downturn?
PARISI:For us it’s been a combination of three guiding principles: knowing what kept our company going for half a century that we shouldn’t change, understanding at the same time that the technology?driven change around us can be a pathway to new business opportunity, and “walking the talk” in terms of working smarter and more successfully by making our operating budgets do more.
If we resisted the evolution of the modern American workplace, in 2011 we would have been looking aimlessly for customers in need of typewriters instead of new document management solutions, IT services, managed print services or office supplies.
PBN: How can a paper and printing company be ecologically friendly? How does Innovex take measures to determine and encourage the most sustainable practices?
PARISI: The fact that organizations will always need to share information by printing or electronically transmitting documents is why our new PACE office audit and managed print services are such invaluable sustainability tools, because we know to connect groups of devices to save energy and materials while managing proper parts disposal for our customers.
What surprises a lot of people is that the prolonged electricity draw of an inactive printer that is plugged in but doesn’t have an auto?sleep feature can be more expensive and consuming of energy than is printing a one-page email in two seconds. Ironically, that would take less ink if people didn’t add the instruction at the close of an email that asks the recipient to not print it.
PBN: Advanced Business Machines changed its name to Innovex in its 50th year of business. What do the next 50 years hold in store for your business?
PARISI: Our founders’ typewriter business for customers of the “Mad Men” era is today’s wireless MFD, and our original Providence storefront is now our new .co website that puts essential office products, services and meter readings within a screen touch from a smart phone, iPad or Tablet PC.
Growth in digital and on?demand publishing are increasing customer interest in both electronic document security protections and higher capacity color printers. … To remain relevant, our organizations must provide what the marketplace wants and deliver it how and where our customers need, and with a competitive price to value proposition.
For Innovex, that will continue to be the most forward?reaching workplace productivity technologies, products and services available at the required time, provided with our signature friendly customer service – our work style that I expect will be even more appreciated in the future.
