JOHNSTON – For the first time in its 170-year history, business insurance giant FM Global is providing free access to thousands of pages of its own property-loss-prevention data.
The data sheets – engineering guidelines that can be used by large businesses, facility and risk managers, architects, consultant and contractors – are available online at www.FMGlobal DataSheets.com. The intent of the data is to reduce threats from fire and severe weather, as well as risks from electrical and mechanical equipment failures.

FM Global – a commercial and industrial property insurer and the state’s largest privately owned company – said its decision to release the data reflects the changing risk profiles of its clients worldwide, particularly the increasing interdependence of business in the global and high-tech economy.

“Companies are now so intertwined and geographically dispersed, that to help them reduce risk and prevent loss, it is beneficial to make our intellectual property widely accessible,” said Tom Lawson, FM Global’s senior vice president of engineering and research.
“FM Global is always developing new property-loss-prevention solutions, and we feel this complete access to our engineering recommendations can be invaluable to helping businesses manage the evolving risk environment in this increasingly interconnected world.”
The sheets contain risk-prevention information on hundreds of topics ranging from building construction and fire prevention to industrial equipment maintenance and natural disaster preparedness.
Subjects covered by FM Global’s data sheets include construction, water supply, sprinklers and other extinguishing equipment, system instrumentation and control, pressure vessels, mechanical systems, and welding electrical systems, boilers and heating equipment, hazards, storage and human factors.
Users who download the content also receive automatic notification via e-mail when those data sheets are updated.
FM Global said it is the only commercial property insurer in the world that develops and provides this type of premium technical data, all of which is based on scientific research and the company’s nearly two centuries of loss-prevention experience.
Earlier this month, FM Approvals, a unit of FM Global, released its entire approval guide online, also for free. (READ MORE) The guide is designed to help architects, consulting engineers, facility managers and contractors in buying equipment and materials for commercial properties.
