Free drinks for young techies Thursday

PROVIDENCE – A local IT placement firm is using a tried-and-true formula to attract the younger tech crowd to an event on Thursday: free food, free booze and a free computer.

East Greenwich-based Bridge Technical Solutions will hold its first Rhode Island Young Information Technology Happy Hour on Thursday, April 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the downtown bar McFadden’s, 52 Pine St., Providence.

In a post on the firm’s blog, James Wright, a partner at Bridge, said he and his partners are trying to reach out to younger tech workers who are less likely to attend traditional events for networking than their older colleagues.

“The clichés ring true: young professionals are the brainpower and creative engine that will drive Rhode Island’s economy in the future, the entrepreneurs and idea spark plugs who will help us jump the curve,” Wright wrote. “These young people have the time, energy and risk tolerance to power Rhode Island’s next phase of growth.”

Wright also emphasized that Bridge was not setting a specific definition of young – “if you feel young come on by,” he said – and added that tech workers can bring their friends from outside of the industry, as well. “[W]e’re hoping to get a strong turnout from other young Rhode Island professionals,” he said.

Anyone who wants to attend can sign up at www.bridgetechnicalsolutions.com/pages/RIYIT.cfm. People who sign up online will get a free drink ticket at the door and be entered into a raffle for an Asus netbook. Bridge is providing free food, and free parking is available behind McFadden’s and on the street.

Bridge is also a sponsor of RI Nexus, the R.I. Economic Development Corporation’s portal for the state’s IT and digital media sector.
