PROVIDENCE – This year, holiday shoppers will once again be able to park for free in certain commercial districts in Providence, but only for two hours.
“Last year there was no time limit … but we spent some time with the merchants who expressed concern that when you have all-day free parking, commuters tend to use the spots and shoppers don’t get them,” said a spokesperson at Providence Mayor David N. The program, designed to help boost the local economy, will begin on Black Friday and end on Jan. 1. Shoppers will be able to park for free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the following districts:
- Downtown Providence bounded by Steeple Street, west to Interstate 95; south along I-95 to Interstate 195; east along I-195 to Point Street.; Point Street to Wickenden Street; north on South Main Street to North Main Street at Steeple Street (exclusive of the court district).
- Broad Street – Public Street to Montgomery Avenue
- Atwells Avenue – Bradford Street to Knight Street
- North Main Street – Thomas Street to Park Row
- Olneyville Square – Route 10 to Sydney Court and Delaine Street to Atwood Street to Magnolia Street
- South Main Street – Wickenden Street to Packet Street
- Wayland Square – East Angell/Angell to Gano Street; Wayland Avenue from Angell to Pitman streets
- Hope Street – Rochambeau Avenue to Blackstone Boulevard
- Wickenden/Ives – Wickenden Street at Benefit Street to Ives Street at Preston Street
- Thayer Street – Meeting Street to Bowen Street
The two-hour time limit will be strictly enforced by parking enforcement officers, the mayor’s office said in a news release, and cars parked illegally – including in cross walks and tow zones – will be ticketed.
