LINCOLN — Local software development company nFinity Inc. has released a new version of QuickVoice, its popular free application for the iPhone and iPod Touch, that adds a feature allowing people to record and send voice e-mail messages.

Last summer, QuickVoice was one of the first applications to become a hit after the debut of Apple’s App Store. NFinity said QuickVoice is currently the top-ranked voice recorder application in 38 countries and second-ranked in 20 more.

The QuickVoice iPhone app had been priced at $1.99 but is now available for free; the desktop version of the program costs $15.

More than half a million people have downloaded the QuickVoice app over the last four months, according to nFinity business manager Kerrie-Lynn Corcoran. “We’re excited about our position in this highly competitive field,” she said in a statement. “The iPhone is an amazing device and our goal has always been to provide a voice recorder that’s worthy of it.”

However, nFinity faces new competition in the coming months from none other than Apple itself.

At an event last month previewing the third edition of its iPhone operating system, the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant announced it will include its own free voice-recorder app, called Voice Memos, when the next version of the iPhone is released next summer.

But Corcoran said she expected that QuickVoice would be able to withstand the new competition from Apple because it provides a comprehensive range of features for customers to manage their voice recordings.

The company also makes a program called Audio Postcard that allows people to create digital postcards using their own photos and voice messages.
