Gass participates in international breast cancer groups

PROVIDENCE – Dr. Jennifer S. Gass, surgeon-in-chief and co-director of the Breast Health Center at Women & Infants Hospital, is an internationally recognized resource in the field of oncoplastic breast cancer surgery and cancer survivorship issues and was recently invited to participate in two key groups. Oncoplastic breast cancer surgery combines the most up-to-date plastic surgery techniques with surgical oncology.

After Gass completed a one-month sabbatical at the Paris Breast Center in 2011 in the novel surgical procedure that combines the best techniques from plastic surgery with oncologic surgery to remove breast cancer, she brought oncoplastic surgery to Women & Infants, which was the first New England facility to adopt such procedures.

A surveyor for the National Accreditation for Breast Centers, Gass directs the breast fellowship at Women & Infants and is a clinical associate professor at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Recently invited to participate in the Internationale Senologic Society in Warsaw, Poland, Gass presented on oncoplastic surgery and served on the Global Breast Health Initiative working group.

“As we gain a greater appreciation of the cancer survivorship journey, we better catalogue patient reported outcomes in survivorship,” Gass said in a statement. “Oncoplastic surgery is one technique surgeons can provide that may empower women who want to preserve and reconstruct their breasts in the most natural looking way at the time the cancer is removed.”

In addition, she was the invited co-chair of the American Society of Breast Surgeon’s survivorship pre-conference course at the group’s recent annual meeting, where she was asked to submit a manuscript for the course offering.
