Gilbane wins VA contract

PROVIDENCE – Gilbane Building Co. has won a $17.7 million contract to design and build an addition at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Providence.
The Providence-based construction giant is expected to start work in the spring and wrap up the project by January 2012, VA Public Affairs Officer Tom Antonaccio said.
The five-story addition will include two floors for a mental health clinic, two floors for specialty clinics and a floor for the structure’s mechanical equipment.
“We’re just trying to take advantage of some of the additional funding that’s been for construction,” Antonaccio said.
The project is being coordinated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has an agreement with the VA in Providence to manage some of its projects. The Corps awarded the contract to Gilbane last month.
