Bradley Weaver’s priorities changed after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. At the time, he was working for Accenture, the global consulting firm, in New York City, but that morning he was on an executive retreat in Minneapolis.
Someone interrupted the speaker and delivered the news, and within minutes, he said, it was total chaos, and people were rushing to get back to their loved ones. Weaver drove all through the night to get back to the city.
“As a result of that day,” he wrote in his 40 Under Forty application, “I spent a lot of time re-evaluating my priorities and life goals. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to feel a sense of community and wanted very much to be able to see the change and impact of my contribution in my work and in my community.”
Living in Rhode Island now, and working with Blue Cross since December 2004, Weaver says, he’s started to realize that goal, because there’s a “strong sense of community” here, and the company has “such a strong local commitment.”
Weaver is chief information security officer for the nonprofit company, responsible for ensuring that the private data for Blue Cross’ more than 650,000 members is kept safe.
Companies had began to focus on security even before Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but since then, many have substantially bolstered their efforts, hiring top-level executives for the job.
Prior to coming to Rhode Island, Weaver worked at Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg, Pa., for almost two years, serving as chief of staff for the chief operating officer and managing three claims systems platforms. Before that, he had been at Accenture for two years, providing “solutions engineering” consulting services to several Blue Cross plans, UnitedHealthcare, a state Medicaid program and other clients.
At Blue Cross, Weaver has developed and implemented a security strategy and ensured that both internal and outsourced operations are secure – from enrollment, to call center operations, to premium billing and medical management.
Weaver is also Six Sigma certified, and he has led Blue Cross’ efforts to enhance service and responsiveness regarding member enrollment and claims processing.
