PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI enrollment has declined since last week because some enrollees failed to make their first premium payment by Dec. 31 for coverage and were canceled.
According to the state-based exchange, 30,015 individuals have enrolled as of Jan. 9, representing those who have paid and those who have not but were not canceled.
HealthSource last week reported that 34,627 enrolled as of Jan. 2, resulting in a difference of approximately 4,600 individuals, according to the latest figures. A total of 28,756 of the 30,015 individuals who are counted as enrolled have paid their first month’s premium.
Regarding the most recent number, nearly all the enrollees are current HSRI members who were auto-renewed into a 2016 plan; 4,333 of them selected a plan for 2016 coverage and are new to the exchange this year or are returning after being enrolled during a previous period, HSRI said.

Open enrollment on the exchange began Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 31 for individuals and families; small employers can enroll at their renewal date regardless of when it falls during a calendar year; the same is true for Medicaid-eligible individuals, HSRI said.
Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island continues to be the most popular plan with 49 percent of enrollments, followed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island at 47 percent and UnitedHealthcare of New England at 4 percent.
