HOUSEHOLD SAINTS: African Spirituality in Cuban Art and Culture January 19 – February 26
The 1st floor gallery exhibit explores the African Spiritual traditions that have blended with the Indigenous and Christian traditions in Cuban Art and Culture. The exhibit comes from The Cuban Art Space/The Center for Cuban Studies in New York City through Sandra Levinson who has traveled to Cuba for cultural exchange, studying the culture and representing Cuban artists in the USA for over 40 years. The exhibit includes work by Manuel Mendive, Elio Vilva, Salvador González, Alejandro Lazo, Jacqueline & Yamilys Brito, Erik Castillo, Javier Gallosa, Suitberto Goire, Montebravo, Mederox, Alicia Leal, and Fidel Reina.
The second floor gallery will feature a Household Altar to the Empress Oya created by local Cuban born Santero Steve Quintana with art work by local artists with Cuban Heritage including Astrid, Ana Flores, Tamara Diaz, and the photographic documentary of local Santeria Alters and Thrones by Paul Daglieri.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS explore the blending of spirituality from Africa, Cuban Indigenous and Christian Traditions in Cuba and America, shared in an informal Cabaret setting in the Paff Auditorium with light refreshments.
Reception & presentations by Sandra Levinson Executive Director, The Center for Cuban Study of the Cuban Art Space, is a scholar on Cuban art and Culture. She has traveled to Cuba for over 40 years bringing with educational groups for research and study. She has represented Cuban artists and their work in the USA. In addition, local Cuban born Santero Steve Quintana, a spiritual leader and educator, will share the history and practice of African based spirituality in Cuba. There will be music provided by New Jersey based Mario Carret and his ensemble Feb 2, 5:00-7:00
Reception & presentation including a reading by Cuban born Rhode Island artist Ana Flores from her Cuban Journal documenting her return to Cuba; a music, dance and dramatic presentation from African-American Spirituals by local performance artist Melodie Thompson Thomas and RISD artist, singer Tony Johnson; along with the original work of spoken word performance artist Natasha Busari Feb 3, 5:00-7:00
Reception with Dance, Music, Drumming and Spoken Word Performance by Human Creativity from Central Falls High School sharing traditions from West Africa, Latin, Cape Verde, Hip-Hop cultures along with original vocal and instrumental music by Central Falls graduate Jose Docen Feb 4, 5:00-7:00
