Jane’s Walk returns to Providence with 12 tours May 4-6

PROVIDENCE – Starting Friday and running through Sunday, The Providence Foundation and Doors Open Rhode Island will take part in an international festival known as Jane’s Walk in celebration of urban planning and development pioneer Jane Jacobs.

Continuing its participation in this festival, Providence was one of 225 cities in 37 countries to participate in Jane’s Walk in 2017. This year, 12 planned tours, led by volunteer guides, will showcase some of the city’s neighborhoods from the perspective of the people who live in them.

Friday

  • Rhode Island and the International Slave Trade led by Elon Cook at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Brown and Power streets.
  • Mt. Pleasant/Elmhurst led by Mark Carty at 3:15 p.m. at the main staircase at La Salle Academy.
  • Where I-195 Used to Be led by Ian Baldwin at 5 p.m. at the Johnson & Wales University Student Services Center, 274 Pine St.

Saturday

  • Fields Point: A History of Fill, Industry, Recreation, and Infrastructure led by Manuel Cordero at 10 a.m. at the Save The Bay Center, 100 Save The Bay Drive.
  • A Walking Conversation on the Past and Future of Benefit Street led by Tim More at 10 a.m. at the corner of Jenckes and Benefit streets.
  • Pond Street: A Walk Through a Lost Neighborhood led by Taylor M. Polites and Christina Bevilacqua at 12 p.m. at the corner of Empire and Weybosset streets in front of Beneficent Congregational Church.
  • Experiencing Broad Street led by Jim Barnes at 1 p.m. at Parkview Cafe, 1228 Broad St.
  • Creative Capital: Stories from the North Burial Ground led by Erik Christiansen and Fran Leazes at 2 p.m. at the North Burial Ground pedestrian gate at North Main Street and Rochambeau Avenue.
  • Discovering Roger Williams Park led by Christopher Ackley at 3 p.m. at Monument to Roger Williams at the park’s Elmwood Avenue entrance, past the casino.
  • Providence’s Waterfront: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly led by David Brussat at 4 p.m. at Crawford Street Bridge, near Hemenway’s.

Sunday

  • Summit Neighborhood: A Closer Look led by Mike Fink and Ed Neubauer at 11 a.m. at The Parlour, 1119 North Main St.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: Public Art on & off Wickenden led by C.J. Opperthauser at 3 p.m. at South Main and Wickenden streets.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. Advanced registration is not required.
