John Hancock seeking buyer for Boston tower complex

John Hancock Financial
Services Inc. said it will sell three of its office buildings,
including the John Hancock Tower, the tallest building in New
England, to free up capital for other investments.

The Boston-based life insurer and investment company didn’t
disclose the price it is seeking for the 62-story John Hancock
Tower, built in 1973, the Stephen L. Brown building built in 1923
and the Berkeley building, built in 1946. The Tower complex has
almost three million square feet of office space.

The tower was designed by architect I.M. Pei, who also
designed the Javitz Convention Center in New York, the pyramid at
the Louvre in Paris and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in
Cleveland. Skyscrapers such as the John Hancock Tower have become
security worries for building owners since the Sept. 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks that destroyed Manhattan’s twin towers.

“The Hancock Tower is a total 9-11 building,” said Jane
Holtz Kay, the author of “Asphalt Nation,” “Lost Boston” and
after the attacks. “Everybody thought it was a subterfuge. They
didn’t want to be bothered by people.”
