Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation celebrates 17th annual 5k memorial run/walk

NARRAGANSETT – The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation celebrated its 17th annual 5K on June 12 to honor the memory of DeCubellis, who at 13 was killed by a drunken driver in October 1999.

This year’s winners were Adam Thies, who had a time of 17 minutes and 1 second beating his 2015 time by 18 seconds, and Paige Ethier who had a time of 19 minutes and 30 seconds. Both top-place finishers compete for the University of Rhode Island.

More than 400 runners participated in Sunday’s event and, for the first time, schools and youth organizations were allowed to participate as teams with awards presented for the team with the most participants and the team with the best overall average time, said John DeCubellis, KDMF executive director.

He added, “We were hoping that this opportunity will create increased participation amongst children and young adults.”

Since the founding of the organization, KDMF has awarded more than $350,000 in scholarships, prizes and donations, and John and Meg DeCubellis have spoken to nearly 150,000 students and adults at conferences and assemblies throughout the country on the dangers of drunken driving and substance abuse.
