NORTH KINGSTOWN – LIFEcycle Inc. has awarded $15,000 to the Leonard and Adele R. Decof Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Miriam Hospital.

The funds will allow Miriam to purchase new bariatric equipment and furniture for its cancer center, including a stretcher bed that can also be used to weigh patients and bariatric chairs for patients who need them during treatment.

The cancer center at Miriam, known as a bariatric center of excellence, currently borrows this equipment from the main hospital to treat patients, causing delays in treatment and patient discomfort. LIFEcycle’s grant will ensure timely and appropriate care for patients in the cancer center, as well as keep patients comfortable during their treatments, which can sometimes last several hours.

Between 10 percent and 15 percent of all patients at Miriam stand to benefit from the purchase of the equipment and furniture.

“All of us at The Miriam are grateful to LIFEcycle for their generous and ongoing support of our cancer care and research programs. This grant will have a direct impact on our bariatric cancer patients by providing added levels of comfort during their treatments. We can’t thank the LIFEcycle community enough for their fundraising efforts,” said Arthur Sampson, president of The Miriam Hospital.

Funding for the equipment was made possible by LIFEcycle’s community of riders, donors and volunteers who participated in Ride ’Round Rhody 2017, powered by MojoTech. Every summer, Southeastern New Englanders come together for a scenic ride through Washington County at LIFEcycle’s annual bike-a-thon. Cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to choose a 15-, 40-, or 80-mile route and have fun, all while making a difference.
