PAWTUCKET – Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island’s Center for Primary Care and Prevention, an affiliate of the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, has announced a “strategic collaboration” with electronic health record (EHR) provider ICW America to “develop and test a 21st century patient-centered, e-Health model of care.”
In a joint project, they will create patient-controlled personal health records (PHRs) – based on ICW’s LifeSensor model – that will be integrated with the care providers’ electronic medical records. They also will attempt to measure the effects on patient safety and quality of care.
“ICW has been very impressed with the environment of quality improvement supported by Brown and Memorial at the Center,” said Jeremy P. Coote, CEO of ICW America. “Equally impressive is their record of accomplishment in research and innovation, including clear leadership in embracing health information technology.
“The Center’s orientation toward improving the patient-physician relationship and fully involving the patient and the patient’s family in clinical care closely matches ICW’s vision.”
The initiative will be spearheaded by Dr. Charles Eaton, the center’s director and a professor of family medicine at Brown, who has been a leader in local efforts to employ electronic medical records. (READ MORE)
“LifeSensor, as an integrated PHR, fully supports the concept that healthcare providers and patients are equal partners in monitoring and managing patients’ health,” Eaton said.
“The model we envision creating with ICW will enable and empower patients to take more responsibility for their health. With our program design, we believe that we may actually prevent illness or certainly lessen the seriousness and impact of diseases.”
One benefit they envision, Eaton said, is that the integrated health records will foster better doctor-patient communications. LifeSensor “is not meant to replace the traditional doctor’s office practice but rather enhance and improve upon it,” he said.
ICW America is a division of InterComponentWare AG, a provider of electronic health records and related software, which has operations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria and the United States. To learn more, visit www.icw-global.com.
