Plan Calls For Federal Hill House To Use Holy Ghost School
PROVIDENCE, RI, June 21, 2010—Steven Meresi, vice president of the Federal Hill House and a candidate for city councilman in Ward 13, recently announced a plan that would let the Federal Hill House expand services by using a soon-to-be vacant school building. The plan calls for the community center to lease Holy Ghost School, which will close after this year, allowing the Federal Hill House to expand child care, senior, and after school services. Leasing the school would also enable the community center to expand its emergency food pantry. The announcement was made at the “Meet the Candidate” night at the Bravo Brasserie, Providence.
Meresi, who is a chairman of the community center’s property committee, says that he and other representatives from the Federal Hill House will meet with Father Lando, pastor of Holy Ghost Church, in a few weeks to tour the school, discuss leasing arrangements, and talk about the logistics involved in using the school building. Holy Ghost is closing because enrollment is down. It’s the second elementary school to close in Ward 13th in the last few years. The first to close was West Broadway Elementary.
“This is a win-win situation for everyone involved,” says Meresi. “It lets the Federal Hill House expand its programs cost-effectively. It lets the parish lease out a building that would otherwise be vacant. And it lets community members access more services. I’m sure once we sit down with Father Lando we can get something done.”
Meresi announced his candidacy for city councilman in February. He is co-founder of the Federal Hill Community Coalition (FHCC), vice president of the Federal Hill House, and a member of the Federal Hill Commerce Association. He is also a member of the Federal Hill Knights of Columbus, the Italo-American Club of Rhode Island, and the Sons of Italy Club. Meresi is a life long resident of Federal Hill and the owner of Palmeri’s Bakery, the oldest bakery in Rhode Island.
