National Grid ‘GreenUp’ program among top 10

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – National Grid’s “GreenUp” renewable energy program has been ranked among the top 10 utility company “green” power programs nationwide by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Though “green power sales continue to show strong growth across the country, these utilities are the national leaders,” Lori Bird, senior energy analyst at the DOE lab, said in a statement.

The lab’s rankings are based on data provided by the utility companies, including total sales of renewable energy to participants and total number of customer participants. GreenUp ranked eighth in both categories out of 600 U.S. utilities’ programs.

Through GreenUp, suppliers of renewable power – from wind, hydropower, landfill gases, etc. – are able to offer electricity to National Grid customers. As of December, nearly 24,000 National Grid customers in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island had participated.
