SMITHFIELD — Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island has named Dr. Marylou Buyse chief medical officer and senior vice president.
Buyse, according to a media release Wednesday, served in multiple leadership roles at various health plans during her career. Among them are being senior medical director at Pittsburgh-based Highmark Inc., vice president of health affairs with UnitedHealthcare of New England and chief medical director for Scott & White Health Plan of Texas. She also was president and CEO of the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans from 2001 to 2009 and served one year as the Massachusetts Medical Society’s president in 1998.

Additionally, Buyse served on several boards and committees, including the Rhode Island chapters of the American Heart Association and March of Dimes, the Massachusetts Health Council, the Massachusetts Cost and Quality Council, the Commission to End Cervical Cancer and the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium.
“I am thrilled to join Neighborhood [Health Plan of Rhode Island], which is consistently ranked among the highest health plans nationally by the National Commission for Quality Assurance,” Buyse said in a statement. “I was also drawn to the mission-driven culture of Neighborhood which is devoted to working together to improve the health care experience for our members.”
In a statement, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island President and CEO Peter Marino said Buyse brings a “depth of industry knowledge in both Medicaid and Medicare that will keep us at the forefront of innovative care for our members.”
