When COVID-19 struck in spring 2020, a strong company culture left employees at New England Construction better prepared to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic, said Kim Sluter, company vice president.

The business, now owned by the second generation of the Sluter family, continues to provide construction services for a variety of markets, including retail, multiunit housing, hospitality, life science, education and corporate offices.

Over the last few years, the business has worked on solidifying its core values, Sluter said, emphasizing support for fellow employees while remaining focused on other core tenets such as “obsess over client success.” Additionally, the business has added employee perks such as unlimited personal time off.

The company has also increased gender diversity on its staff. In an industry workforce that is typically made up of about 10% women, 35% of New England Construction’s employees are women, including two of the five members of the business’s senior leadership team.

Notable ongoing projects include a new location of the Providence Community Health Centers and a mixed-use development in Providence’s I-195 Redevelopment District that includes 62 residential units and a grocery store.

The business has also expanded to a second location in Boston. While 75% to 85% of the business’s employees are Rhode Island-based, the Boston location will provide easier access to its projects in the Boston area, Sluter said, such as a senior housing development in the works in East Boston.
