PROVIDENCE – The consumer price index in the Northeast increased 1.9% year over year in November, slower than the national average of 2.1%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Wednesday.
The rise in prices in the region was offset by a decline in energy, apparel, transportation and fuels and utilities.
CPI changes in the region in November:
- Energy CPI declined 2.7% from one year prior, outpacing a national decline of 0.6%.
- Fuels and utilities CPI declined 0.5% year over year, compared with no meaningful increase nationally in that time.
- Apparel costs in the region declined 2.4% year over year, faster than a 1.6% decline nationally.
- Food and beverage inflation increased 2.1% year over year, compared with a 1.9% increase nationally.
- Housing costs in the Northeast increased 2%, slower than a 2.9% rise nationally.
- Transportation costs in the region and country declined 0.1% over the year.
- Medical care CPI increased 5.6% year over year, faster than the national increase of 4.2%.
- Recreation costs increased 1.3%, slower than a 1.9% national increase.
- Education and communication costs increased 3% in the Northeast, faster than the 1.4% rise nationally.
