Providence, RI (Dec. 5, 2009) – Nearly 250 individuals (some 120 flu shots dispensed) came from as far away as Wakefield and Woonsocket to attend a Medicare Drug Plan (Medicare Part D) enrollment workshop and seasonal flu-shot clinic. The Dec. 5 event was a team effort between United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island and the Department of Elderly Affairs (DEA).
The guests crowded into United Way of Rhode Island’s headquarters at 50 Valley St. where 22 vendors had set up information stations. Individuals were able to receive blood-pressure screenings and follow-up appointments as well as a seasonal flu shot and information on enrolling in Medicare’s drug plan, called Part D.

Some 21 knowledgeable staff members and volunteers – all in United Way’s signature LIVE UNITED t-shirts with the 2-1-1 logo on the back – helped out during the busy day, which included an unannounced visit from Providence’s Mayor David N. Cicilline.
Several of the participants heard about the enrollment event and flu-shot clinic that day from Spanish-language radio, Poder WPMZ 1110. Poder – with 10 volunteers – broadcast live from UWRI’s lobby during the event.
