Providence issues RFI, begins first phase of cell wireless infrastructure program

PROVIDENCE – The city announced it will implement the first phase of a small cell wireless infrastructure program concurrent to issuing a request for information, or RFI, to help city officials understand how the hardware and technology works and explore opportunities for its use citywide.

Following the Small Cell Citing Act of 2017, the city adopted the Small Wireless Facility Siting Rules, which “establish standard licensing regulations for installing 5G-enabling technology and small wireless facility networks to city-owned infrastructure,” according to a news release.

The city said it hopes to create a nondiscriminatory, competitively neutral license application process to “ensure efficient and equitable access to public infrastructure.”

Information gathered through the RFI will be used to help the city determine how to support the technology while preserving community investments made through its capital improvement plan and LED streetlight-conversion initiative, according to the release.

Wireless-service providers will be required to submit permit applications for the placement and operation of small cell infrastructure, with up to 15 approved attachment locations per provider during the first phase of the program.
