PROVIDENCE – The Providence School Department was awarded “gold” recognition from the national State Electronics Challenge for its environment-friendly technology practices, the organization said on May 18.
“Through ‘green’ purchasing, minimizing the use of energy and paper and responsible recycling of computer equipment, the district achieved measurable results, and as a result is being awarded the program’s highest award,” commented Lynn Rubinstein, State Electronics Challenge program manager.

It is the second consecutive year the district has achieved the distinction. Among the efforts recognized were the district’s promotion of online file sharing, rather than printing, and ensuring that printer and copiers use double-sided printing.
The district also ensured that all of its computer and monitors had their power saving features turned on. Providence Schools recycled 29 tons of computer equipment, it said.
