PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline, the city’s 36th mayor, has announced plans for the this week’s inaugural festivities, which he termed a “celebration of our city’s successes and tremendous promise.”
“As we approach the beginning of my second term in office, Providence is poised to climb new heights as a result of our collective hard work and commitment to moving this city forward,” the mayor said. “Our accomplishments have really awoken a sense of ambition and limitless possibilities in the spirit of our city. This is a moment to come together as a community to celebrate our successes and recommitment ourselves to the work ahead.”

The festivities are to begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., at The Westin Providence, with an interfaith breakfast for invited guests.
The inauguration itself is set for tomorrow at 11 a.m., when the mayor will officially be sworn in on the front steps of Providence City Hall. Judge William Clifton is to administer the oath of office, and Elizabeth Burke Bryant, executive director of R.I. KIDS COUNT, is to serve as leader of ceremonies.
Also set for 11 a.m. is the swearing-in of the Providence City Council, in the Council Chambers, after which the councilors are to join the inaugural festivities.
Afterward, the public is invited to come inside, to enjoy light refreshments on the third floor City Hall.
In his inaugural address, Cicilline said, he will outline his second-term agenda “and emphasize the importance of making youth our first priority in creating a city of our greatest ambitions.”
The celebration will continue on Friday, Jan. 5, with an inaugural celebration for invited guests at the Providence Biltmore Hotel. Proceeds are to benefit Providence after-school programs and the Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS).
The final event will be A Celebration of the City, Neighborhoods and Families, on Saturday, Jan. 6, featuring free admission at the following attractions for Providence residents:
• Bank of America City Center, Two Kennedy Plaza, free skating for city residents from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South St., free admission for city residents from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Roger Williams Park Zoo, 1000 Elmwood Ave., rree admission for city residents from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• RISD Museum, 224 Benefit St., free admission for city residents from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
