PROVIDENCE – Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Rhode Island increased by 2,402 from Dec. 17 through Sunday, including 650 positive cases identified on Sunday, with six new deaths, the R.I. Department of Health said Monday.
Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients in Rhode Island totaled 230, down from 252 reported on Dec. 17. Of those hospitalized, 36 were in intensive care units and 26 were on a ventilator.

There have been 726.7 new cases per 100,000 Rhode Island residents in the previous seven days, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines as “high transmission.”
The daily case numbers were slightly lower one year ago, with 2,394 total cases identified from Dec. 17-19, 2020. However, there were more hospitalizations at that time, with 463 COVID-19 patients hospitalized on Dec. 19, 2020, of whom 62 were in the ICU and 40 were on a ventilator. The transmission rate on Dec. 19, 2020, was 589.5 cases per 100,000 residents.
To date, there have been 792,946 individuals fully vaccinated in the state, as well as 1.9 million total COVID-19 vaccine doses administered.
Confirmed cases in the state totaled 212,715, an increase of 3,962 from figures reported Dec. 17, accounting for the day-to-day increases and data revisions for previous days.
Deaths due to the virus in Rhode Island totaled 2,998.
There were 8,014 tests processed on Sunday, with a positive rate of 8.1%. There have been 6.42 million tests administered in the state.
