R.I. State Council on the Arts calling for artists to paint Raimondo portrait

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. State Council on the Arts has put out a call to artists to paint the official portrait of former governor Gina M. Raimondo that will be displayed inside the Statehouse.

RISCA said a $50,000 commission fee will be offered to the artist, with additional stipends to cover travel, crating and shipping the finished work. The portrait itself must be no smaller than 29 inches by 25 inches in size, RISCA said, and no more than 114 inches by 74 inches in size with the frame included.

Raimondo will choose the artist from the submissions, RISCA said, and the artist will be required to work with the former governor regarding certain aspects of the commission. The R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission will be involved with respect to the portrait’s finished framing, RISCA said.

RISCA said artists will be required to submit a resume and include between six and 10 digital images of earlier works related to this commission. Artists must apply online by June 30.
