NEWPORT – The Naval Station Newport generated a total direct economic impact of $1.3 billion, according to the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic FY 2016 Economic Impact Report.

The report encompasses the dates Oct. 1, 2015, through Sept. 30, 2016.

The base’s direct economic impact includes a total annual payroll of $952.9 million, of which $528 million is identified as civilian payroll. Total military payroll at the Newport base was $424.9 million.

The Naval Station personnel was a reported 20,296 for the year, of which 7,672 were civilian employees.

The report estimated the NRMA had a direct economic impact of $24.2 billion in fiscal 2016, a $1.8 billion increase from fiscal 2015.

In 2016, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, the largest command at the naval station, reported a regional economic impact of $1.07 billion.
