PROVIDENCE – The Providence-Warwick area was ranked the 13th best metro area in the nation for seniors to retire, according to a report by Storage Café.

The study found the Providence-Warwick metro area – where seniors are 17.1% of the population – has a substantial percentage of age-restricted accommodations in developments with 50 or more units. Forty-two percent of that large-scale rental inventory was age-restricted. Also, the report noted Providence-Warwick metro area boasts solid safety standards and excellent local recreational opportunities that seniors can enjoy, such as golf courses. The average life expectancy in the area is 80 years, according to the report.

Cape-Coral-Fort Myers, Fla., was the best metro area for seniors to retire, according to the report. Seniors comprise most of the population there at 53%. The average income of seniors there is more than $35,000. Cape-Coral-Fort Myers, Fla., residents have an average life expectancy of 82.4 years and benefit from a pleasant tax climate, with their incomes, benefits and inheritances untaxed, although there is both a sales tax and a property tax, according to the report.

The majority of the report’s top 20 locations were found in the Northeast. The fourth best metro area for seniors was the area around New York City, Newark, N.J. and Jersey City, N.J., according to the report. Albany-Schenectady, Troy, N.Y., metro area was sixth; Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., was 10th, Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Mass., was 15th, Syracuse, N.Y., was 19th and Hartford, East Hartford, Middletown, Conn., was 20th.
