PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island is the third most energy-expensive state, according to the latest study by WalletHub.
The Ocean State lags only first place Connecticut and second place Massachusetts in the ranking.
An average monthly energy bill of $338, plus the fourth-highest home heating oil consumption per consumer in the nation, as well as the sixth-highest cost of natural gas and eighth-highest price of electricity, helped elevate Rhode Island to the third spot.
The New England states dominated the top 10, with Vermont at No. 4, Maine at No. 7 and New Hampshire at No. 8.
On the other end of the spectrum, Washington is the least energy-expensive state, with an average electricity bill of $218, preceded by the District of Columbia and Colorado, with average electricity bills of $219 and $235, respectively.
To come up with the study results, WalletHub’s analysts compared the average monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia using a formula that accounts for the following residential energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.
In the U.S., WalletHub said energy costs account for anywhere between 5 and 22 percent of families’ total after-tax income, with the poorest Americans, or 25 million households, paying the highest of that range.
