Pet Food Experts Inc. distinguishes itself as a great place to work with a culture of ingenuity and respect.
The pet food and supplies distribution company is based on a meritocracy that rewards not just talented workers but people who add value without being told to do so. Resourcefulness is rewarded not only with raises, bonuses and promotions, but greater inclusion in customer and vendor dinners and other events.
“Management allows and encourages everyone to have a voice in the direction of the company,” said CFO Jim Alden. In fact, micromanagement is not tolerated. “[We] operate in a decentralized, autonomous culture where employees are allowed creativity.”
The company’s top benefit though is a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) plan that covers doctor-visit copays and 100 percent of employee deductibles, so the only medical cost incurred by employees is part of a subsidized premium.
Warehouse workers are paid above average and can take advantage of incentive programs. For instance, second-shift workers are eligible for bonus pay based on volume and order accuracy which can be up to 50 percent of their hourly wage.
In addition, the executive team receives 10 percent of S-corporation profits, and that profit-sharing benefit will be extended to middle management.
Employees who want to move up can take advantage of internal training programs, and an open-door policy with upper management fosters discussion about challenges or suggestions on ways to improve how things are done. •
