PROVIDENCE – The number of foreclosure filings in Rhode Island edged lower in February compared with the prior month but remained far above the levels of a year earlier, RealtyTrac Inc. reported Thursday.
The real estate tracking firm said there were 619 foreclosure filings in February, down 4.6 percent from January but up 51 percent from February 2009. RealtyTrac said that meant 1 in every 703 homes in the Ocean State received a notice, compared with 1 in every 418 homes nationwide.

Nationally, February foreclosure filings increased 6 percent compared with a year earlier but fell 2 percent from January.
“The 6 percent year-over-year increase we saw in February was the smallest annual increase we’ve seen since January 2006, when we began calculating year-over-year increases, but it still marked the 50th consecutive month of year-over-year increases in foreclosure activity,” RealtyTrac CEO James J. Saccacio said in a statement.
Nevada topped the charts with the highest foreclosure rate for the 38th month in a row, with 1 in every 102 homes receiving a foreclosure notice last month, RealtyTrac said.
Arizona and Florida followed with the next-highest rates, with 1 in every 163 housing units receiving a foreclosure filing in both states.
