R.I. foreclosures up in March

PROVIDENCE – The number of Rhode Island mortgages in foreclosure rose by 1 percentage point in March to 3.5 percent compared with the same month last year, CoreLogic said Monday.
The real estate tracking firm said another 7.8 percent of mortgage holders were 90 days or more late with their payments, a drop of half a percentage point from the same time last year.
In the Providence metropolitan area – including Fall River and New Bedford – the number of properties in foreclosure rose to 3.3 percent in March from 2.4 percent a year earlier.
The area’s foreclosure rate has increased every month since April 2010.
The number of borrowers with payments 90 days or more past due fell to 7.6 percent from 8.2 percent a year earlier and from 7.8 percent in February.
The regional figures tracked closely with national data. Across the country, CoreLogic said 3.6 percent of mortgages were in foreclosure, up half a percentage point from a year earlier. Meanwhile 7.5 percent of mortgage holders were 90 days or more past due.
