Rhode Island ranked 14th in the number of patents granted per resident in 2008, according to a study by IsoPatent LLC.
Rhode Island had 29 patents granted for every 100,000 residents, tied with Arizona at No. 14 on the rankings for which states had the most patents, according to Arizona-based IsoPatent, a firm that provides guidance to inventors and entrepreneurs.

Topping the list was Vermont, with 83 patents per 100,000 residents, followed by Idaho (79 patents), Washington (63), California (60) and Massachusetts (60). Connecticut ranked seventh, with 46 patents for every 100,000 residents.
Alaska ranked last on the list, with just four patents per 100,000 residents. Mississippi, West Virginia and Arkansas were tied for second-last, with five patents per 100,000 people.
IsoPatent put together the list to promote a new book, “Business Success Through Innovation,” by its president, Amy L. Hartzer, and David E. Rogers, a patent and trademark attorney.
