R.I. retailers to receive temporary payment coupons

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island retailers will receive temporary payment coupons along with their new sales tax permits July 1, instead of the usual booklet of coupons, according to the state’s Division of Taxation.
The sales tax for the upcoming fiscal year is still undecided; the taxation department is aiming to conserve efforts in the case that state law is changed.
The temporary coupons will cover three payment periods — three months for merchants who file sales tax returns monthly or three quarters for those who use quarterly coupons.
Once the General Assembly has voted on the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the R.I. Division of Taxation will mail merchants additional coupons to use for the rest of the year.
Merchants who file sales tax returns electronically will be unaffected by the change and will still receive their new permits July 1.
