PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island College is joining with the R.I. Student Loan Authority to add a financial literacy class to the school’s Preparatory Enrollment Program (PEP).
PEP is a pre-college academic program open to disabled or first-generation, low-income Rhode Island high school graduates. In the summer before their freshman year, the students take seven weeks of preparatory classes.
“Students need basic financial-literacy information on topics such as budgeting, credit cards and identity theft. RISLA is the perfect partner to provide this valuable service,” said Julia Nesbitt, interim director of RIC’s Student Support Services, which runs PEP.
“The RISLA team of experts customized its core offering and financial tools to meet the student needs of PEP,” Nesbitt said.
RISLA, a state-authorized nonprofit, provides college planning, financial aid and financial-literacy programs through the College Planning Center of Rhode Island. •
