RIDOT: I-295 exit renumbering begins next week

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation reminded motorists that the Interstate 295 highway renumbering program begins on Tuesday, Nov. 27.

The program will begin with the Diamond Hill Road/Route 114 interchange in Cumberland. The project will proceed north to south covering all of I-295.

The new numbering will be keyed to mile markers, which RIDOT said allows for easier expansion for future interchanges and provides motorists with information on how far they will have to drive to reach a specific exit.

Work will take place during the daytime and overnight hours.

RIDOT also contacted electronic mapping and GPS companies to inform them of the new exit numbers. Exits will temporarily have their old exit numbers paired with the new numbers so that motorists may become acclimated to the change.

The project is currently scheduled to take place over two weeks, but the department noted that its schedule is weather dependent.
