PROVIDENCE – The state’s official website, RI.gov, announced Thursday it has launched a free iPhone application to provide quick access to Rhode Island government news and resources.
The RI.gov application includes the latest state government news and meetings, Twitter postings from state agencies and officials, photos, maps and more. Users of the application can also browse and search for online government services with their mobile device’s search interface.

Rhode Island Interactive, the Providence-based subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC USA that also maintains the RI.gov website, developed the application.
“We wanted to create an on-the-go version of RI.gov appropriate for a mobile user,” said Dan Chapman, director of Creative Services for Rhode Island Interactive. “Mobile users can now access the same services that we offer on RI.gov – state government news, addresses, phone numbers, and even online forms.”
The free application is designed for use on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad interfaces (although Chapman added that the application is not optimized for the iPad yet), and is now available through the iPhone App Store and iTunes.
NIC USA provides website services for more than 20 state governments in addition to other federal, state and local agencies. NIC’s Rhode Island Interactive has a long-term contract with the Ocean State to develop and manage RI.gov, which uses a self-funded model not supported by taxpayer dollars.

THis is all very nice, but it would be a whole lot more useful to have assembly votes posted online so that citizen taxpayers can see who’s voting in their best interests – and who’s not!.
